The History Behind Souda
Souda’s founders, Shaun Kasperbauer, Luft Tanaka, and Isaac Friedman-Heiman met at Parsons School of Design fresh-faced and ready to strike out in the world of design. Despite their lack of resources and upstart capital, they felt an unwavering urge to put their recently-minted industrial design degrees to use and launch a home goods company. So, fueled with fire, sketch books full of designs, and a youthful determination the founders set out to shake up the New York design scene.
The group found a studio in the gritty neighbourhood of Bushwick, recognised for its flourishing roster of artist studios, independent start ups and homegrown creative scene. The post-industrial heartland of Brooklyn provided the ideal stomping-ground for the brand, with the influential spread of the area reaching far beyond its borders. Invigorated by this new, urban creative scene, Souda found a home.
In the early days, production was done in-house, formulating a hand-crafted organicism in each item. Due to an overwhelming increase in demand, Souda has since sought out the best factories around the globe to ensure that each item remains faithful to the original character of the design. With an unspoken respect for materials, and an eye towards the details, Souda’s production guarantees quality and originality in every piece.
On account of this diligence and commitment to authenticity and originality, the bright young graduates became noteworthy recipients of accolades typically reserved for old pros. With a New York Design Award, inclusion on Sight Unseen’s Hot List, and the coveted ICFF’s Best New Designer Award to their name, Souda’s successes keep on growing.
Since its founding, in the space of a mere three years, Souda has ascended to new heights. Now, with a roster of international designers, multiple award-winning collections, and a wealth of stockists across the Americas, Asia and soon-to-be Europe, Souda is setting a new standard for what it means to be an American design brand.
